Karlsson scores OT winner as Golden Knights thwart Sharks' comeback bid

William Karlsson scored 8:17 into overtime and the Vegas Golden Knights bounced back from a blown lead late in the third period to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Monday night to take a 2-1 series lead. After Tomas Hertl tied the game with 1:57 left in regulation, the expansion Golden Knights rebounded and won in overtime despite failing to convert on two early power-play chances. Vegas edges San Jose 4-3 in overtime, leads series 2-1. 2:04 Marc-Andre Fleury made 39 saves, including a brilliant one to rob Logan Couture early in the overtime. Couture had another chance in the sequence before the winning goal. But the Knights broke out with the loose puck and Karlsson beat Martin Jones with a wrist shot high to the stick side and was mobbed by his teammates. AP Published 4:30 p.m. ET April 30, 2018 CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Calgary is looking for a leadership team for a possible bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The city hosted the games in 1988. With the deadline to submit bids to the IOC nine months away, Calgary's city council hasn't decided if it will proceed. Calgary recently put out a call on its website to those interested in becoming the chief executive officer and chair of a bid group. Candidates were asked to be ready to begin such work May 30. The only other Canadian city to hold the Winter Games was Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2010. The Vancouver bid was le

Bale has cut a miserable figure on the bench recently and is set to miss out again as Madrid take a 2-1 lead against Bayern Munich into the second leg. Olympics medals, hockey sticks, torch to adorn Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary

Image
Amazing feats by daredevil athletes in sports such as "big air" snowboarding, mass-start speedskating and oh-so-dangerous alpine skiing thrilled fans during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea. National pride was on display as Canadians won the most medals ever in both Olympic and Paralympic Games. But Gladys Serafino says she probably had a more personal interest than most in watching those medal presentations — with a little bit of luck, the curatorial assistant at Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary could very well be holding some of those medals in the weeks to come. "It does go through the back of your mind," she said with a laugh. "You know, our athletes are incredibly generous in loaning us things." Now that the Games are over, medals, jerseys, hockey sticks, skates, Olympic torches and other memorabilia — as seen on TV — are starting to trickle in. They'll be used to update exhibits at the museum tucked between the

Losing Corey Seager leaves Los Angeles Dodgers' season on brink - SweetSpot

With one of the richest, deepest, most efficient organizations in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers appeared to be impermeable to the yin and yang of baseball cycles. Yet in the wake of Corey Seager ’s season-ending injury , this team has all the earmarks of a club that might go off the rails. Seager’s injury could hardly be more ill-timed, for so many reasons. As it was, the Dodgers led the majors by one obscure metric: projected WAR currently on the disabled list. Justin Turner , Rich Hill , Tom Koehler , Yasiel Puig , Julio Urias and Logan Forsythe comprised a group that hardly had room for a player of Seager’s stature. The news also comes one day after Cody Bellinger , the Dodgers’ Rookie of the Year first baseman, was pulled from a game by manager Dave Roberts for not hustling on a ball hit into Triples Alley at AT&T Park in San Francisco, though Roberts said his decision had to do with more than that one play. Even before Seager’s injury, frustration verged on boiling over

(Photo: Matt Kryger, USA TODAY Sports) John-Henry Krueger, who won a silver medal in short-track speedskating at the Winter Olympics in February, will no longer compete for the United States and will switch allegiance to Hungary, he confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on Monday. Krueger became the only American short-tracker to land on the podium when he placed second in the 1,000-meter event in Pyeongchang, and his decision came four days after he and other Olympians met with President Trump at the White House. In a Facebook conversation with USA TODAY Sports, Krueger confirmed that he will move from the US Speedskating program and compete for the Hungarian national team. Lou Lamoriello out as Maple Leafs GM

Image
While changes on the ice are expected with the Toronto Maple Leafs for next season, a key front-office move was made Monday. Longtime NHL general manager Lou Lamoriello will not return to the post with the Leafs next season, the team announced in a news release. "Three years ago, Lou and I agreed on a contract that would see him serve as general manager of the Maple Leafs for three years and then transition to senior adviser for the following four years," team president Brendan Shanahan said in a statement. "I will now focus all of my attention towards making a decision regarding our next general manager." Shanahan said he doesn't have a timeline for filling the GM position. 'You learn as you go' "I haven't begun that process and that's why nobody has been named," Shanahan said. "My focus was on Lou and making a decision, taking a little bit of time right after the season ended to really reflect on that. So I'm just handling on

FC Seoul head coach resigns after poor season start in S. Korean football league

Image
SEOUL, April 30 (Yonhap) -- FC Seoul head coach Hwang Sun-hong has resigned to take responsibility for his side's poor performance this season, his club said Monday. FC Seoul said Hwang offered to quit his post on Sunday after the club posted a scoreless draw in a home game against Sangju Sangmu. The K League 1 club said it accepted Hwang's resignation and decided to promote assistant coach Lee Eul-yong as interim head coach for remainder of the season. Hwang took the helm of FC Seoul in the middle of the 2016 season after his predecessor, Choi Yong-soo, left for China. The 49-year-old led Seoul to the K League 1 title in the 2016 season, but failed to defend their title last year after finishing in fifth place. The former Busan IPark and Pohang Steelers boss found himself in hot water this season after Seoul's poor season start. Seoul, six-time K League 1 champions, are currently ninth in the 12 team league with two wins, four draws and four losses. Hwang, considere

James Harden continues his domination of the Utah Jazz

HOUSTON -- The Utah Jazz , a relentless team that fought its way from nine games under .500 in late January all the way to the Western Conference semifinals, had put itself in position to perhaps pull off another amazing rally. The Houston Rockets' lead, which swelled to as large as 27 points in the first half of Sunday's Game 1, had been sliced to 11 early in the fourth quarter. Jazz rookie sensation Donovan Mitchell had heated up after a slow start, a threat to go on the kind of scoring flurry that sent the Oklahoma City Thunder on an early vacation. "I was sweating," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni admitted. But D'Antoni had a simple solution: He summoned James Harden off the bench a few minutes earlier than he normally re-enters the game in the fourth quarter. Harden responded as a soon-to-be MVP should. After he snuffed a Jazz fast break with a steal, Harden scored eight points over a span of 2:09. That was the most important stretch of Harden's master

Red Bull duo Verstappen and Ricciardo told to say sorry after crash

Image
Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo have been told to apologise to Red Bull's 800 staff after they took each other out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at 220mph. The pair's mutually race-ending shunt was the fifth time they had gone wheel-to-wheel in Baku. And, after touching tyres earlier in the afternoon, their final collision had an air of inevitability about it. Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, refused to apportion blame to one driver, saying they were 'both in the doghouse'. Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo have been told to apologise to Red Bull's 800 staff Ricciardo crashed into the back of Red Bull team-mate Verstappen while trying to overtake  He added: 'They're equally responsible. What's obviously annoying is that we've given away an awfully large amount of points today, so both drivers will be apologising to all the members of staff who work so hard to put these cars together. 'It's a fine line - competition

No hearing for Tom Wilson hit on Brian Dumoulin: report

A person with direct knowledge of the decision says there will not be a disciplinary hearing for Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson for his hit to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Brian Dumoulin. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the NHL does not announce when there is no hearing for a player. Wilson struck Dumoulin in the head with his left shoulder 4:36 into the second period of Game 2 Sunday. No penalty was called. Dumoulin adjusted his positioning at the last second to brace for a hit from Alex Ovechkin, which was enough to keep Wilson from being suspended. Wilson will be available for Game 3 Tuesday at Pittsburgh. Washington scored the first three goals, and this time they held on for a 4-1 victory, to even their NHL Eastern Conference Second Round playoff series at one game apiece. 2:03 Wilson said after the game he watched replays and didn't know what he could have done to avoid hitting Dumoulin's head. Suspended Boston Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly sits with fans in bleachers at Fenway Park

Image
Boston Red Sox pitcher Joe Kelly could have spent his six-game suspension any way he wanted. On Sunday, that meant roaming around Fenway Park as a fan, hoping to change his team's luck as it was getting blanked by the Tampa Bay Rays . One month into the season, we may have more questions than answers after three teams got No. 1 votes and two new teams pushed their way into MLB's top 10. Nick Kingham accomplished something Sunday that only one major league pitcher had achieved in the past century. The Angels star might be the best player in baseball, but at no point has he settled for that. Are even greater things yet to come? 2 Related Kelly played no on-field role as the Sox rallied for a 4-3 win, but the rally didn't begin until after he left the suite he was sitting in to start the afternoon. "I was in the suite, and we weren't getting any runs, and we were losing, so I moved and went out to the bleachers. We got a couple of runs," Kelly told Boston's

James improved to 13-0 in the first round and kept Cleveland's season alive – for the time being. It took everything James and the Cavs had to hold off the Pacers, who were swept aside by Cleveland a year ago and came in confident after a 34-point win in Game 6.
